How Facebook uses the email address or mobile phone number on your account
How we use your email address or mobile phone number
We may use your email address or mobile phone number for purposes like:
  • Helping you log in. If you forget your password, you'll need an updated phone number or email address to reset it. If you forget or lose access to the email address or phone number associated with your account, you can use one to look up the other.
  • Sending you email, WhatsApp and SMS notifications for updates about activity on your account, promotions and account safety. These notifications can help keep your account safe through features like two-factor authentication and alerts about unrecognized logins.
  • Providing and improving ads for you and others. We use your contact information alongside information we get from your activity to help us improve our ads services for everyone within the Facebook community.
  • Some of our security checkpoints can be difficult to pass using assistive technology. If you add a mobile number or email address to your Facebook account, you'll have another way to verify your account if you need to pass any of these checkpoints. Keep in mind that these checkpoints may require internet access.
We don't ever sell personal information, including your email address and phone number, to anyone. Keep in mind that you can control who can see your contact information and who we can suggest your profile to based on your phone number or email address. Learn more about how Facebook uses your phone number and email address in our Privacy Policy.
You may see an email or phone number suggested for you when we ask you to add your contact information. Emails or phone numbers shown in this way will only be added to your account if you choose to add them.
How we suggest email addresses or phone numbers
We may suggest an email address or phone number for you based on information we receive from sources such as:
  • Contact information provided by others on Facebook.
  • An email address or phone number that you entered previously but didn't confirm.
  • Your mobile phone or tablet.
Reasons for confirming your mobile phone number
We may ask you to confirm your mobile phone number because:
  • You previously added the phone number we're asking you to confirm.
  • Time has passed since you last added or updated your phone number.
  • We’ve received information from your device that helps us suggest the number connected to that device.
  • You haven’t added one yet, and we want to show you how.
